The staple food bamboos of giant panda refer to the bamboos which giant pandas eat freely under natural condition and are fed by human beings in captive breeding condition. The biodiversity formation of the staple food bamboos of giant panda is the result of the co-evolution between giant pandas and bamboo plants in the long-term evolutionary process. The species of giant panda staple food bamboo were collected and sorted out and their important value were analyzed in this paper. The results show that, there are 16 genera, 106 species, 1 variety and 18 cultivars of the staple food bamboo of giant panda, totally 125 species and infraspecific taxa. Among of which, 13 genera, 79 species, 1 variety, 3 cultivars, totaling 83 species and infraspecific taxa, are the staple food for wild giant pandas distributed in Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces, and the other 11 genera, 53 species, 1 variety, 15 cultivars, totaling 68 species and infraspecific taxa, are the staple food for the domesticated giant pandas living in the more than 10 breeding bases and zoos at home and abroad. There are some overlaps between the mentioned two groups of bamboo species and infraspecific taxa. The biodiversity the staple food bamboos of giant pandas is of great significance not only for meeting the needs of wild and domesticated giant pandas, but also for their sustainable utilization.
